Il Festival del Viaggio: l’altra vacanza, sotto casa
A Pisa dal 25 al 29 settembre 2024 la 19a edizione del Festival del Viaggio. La riscoperta del viaggio come sfera mentale.

Il Festival del Viaggio ha peregrinato, com’è giusto che sia per un appuntamento del genere, da Palermo a Venezia, da Roma e soprattutto alla Toscana. Quest’anno, alla sua XIX edizione, si tiene nuovamente a Pisa – repubblica marinara, città mazziniana e universitaria, con la torre pendente, insomma incline al movimento. Quello che va dal 25 al 29 settembre è un programma compatto, senza fronzoli, con le sue perle. Scelgo qui solo alcune delle proposte.
Il Festival, appuntamenti. Cosa fare
Sarei curioso di seguire la passeggiata letteraria in compagnia di Giacomo Leopardi, così magari ci spiegherà come mai trovava i lungarni di Pisa più belli di quelli di Firenze – come una targa puntigliosamente ricorda. Altrimenti ci si potrà addentrare nell’Archivio di Stato – scelta giustissima del Festival, perché archivio è sempre sinonimo di viaggio.
Queste peregrinazioni pisane proseguono nell’Orto Botanico, tra i nostri concittadini alberi, memori che la pagina e la foglia, la carta e la corteccia sono parenti strette. È tema prezioso per una festa del viaggio, e qua ricordo come il calamo fosse l’alternativa vegetale allo stilo, e il senatore siciliano si sarebbe, invece, servito Corrado Arezzo da Spuches, aristocratico e senatore, potente al punto da ottenere che la linea ferrata si fermasse alle porte del suo castello di Donnafugata, nei pressi di Ragusa, e che dal nuovo edificio postale, per decreto del 1880, fosse possibile inviare le foglie dei suoi Ficus macrophylla come cartoline, debitamente affrancate e oggi preziosa rarità filatelica.
A cento anni dalla scomparsa di Puccini, viene proposto dal direttore del Festival, Alessandro Agostinelli, un dialogo immaginario tra il quasi genius loci (anzi, genius mundi) e il di Torre del Lago Dean Benedetti, sassofonista geniale che nella sua breve vita plasmò con Charlie Parker il canone del bebop.
La chiusa del festival è fantastica: uno spettacolo di otto minuti per un solo spettatore, negli ambienti monumentali e ovattati del Royal Victoria Hotel. Non solo vale il viaggio a Pisa, ma riassume il sapore di questo festival: occasioni per riflettere a tu per tu, camminando sulle proprie gambe in spazi ampi o intimi (vi sono appuntamenti anche in aree urbane da scoprire, come la mai.social.maison), la riscoperta del viaggio come sfera mentale e come nomadismo tra gli angoli di casa nostra, e viaggio come occasioni di memoria e di sorpresa. Perché il Festival del Viaggio ci ricorda che anche casa, non si sta bene che altrove.

The Travel Festival: the other vacation, close to home
At the end of September with some proposals
The Festival of Travel has wandered, as is normal for such an event, from Palermo to Venice, from Rome and above all to Tuscany. This year, at its XIX edition, it is held again in Pisa – a maritime republic, a Mazzinian and university city, with the leaning tower, in short, inclined to movement. It is a compact program, without frills, and with its pearls. I choose here only some of the proposals.
I would be curious to follow the literary walk in the company of Giacomo Leopardi, so perhaps he will explain to us why he found the Lungarni of Pisa more beautiful than those of Florence – as a plaque meticulously recalls. Otherwise we can delve into the State Archives – a very right choice of the Festival, because archive is always synonymous with travel. These Pisan wanderings continue in the Botanical Garden, among our fellow citizens trees, mindful that the page and the leaf, the paper and the bark are close relatives. It is a precious theme for a travel festival, and here I remember how the calamus was the vegetal alternative to the stylus, and the Sicilian senator would have, instead, used Corrado Arezzo da Spuches, aristocrat and senator, powerful enough to have the railway line stop at the gates of his castle of Donnafugata, near Ragusa, and that from the new post office building, by decree of 1880, it was possible to send the leaves of his Ficus macrophylla as postcards, duly stamped and today a precious philatelic rarity.
A hundred years after Puccini’s death, the Festival director, Alessandro Agostinelli, proposes an imaginary dialogue between the quasi genius loci (or rather, genius mundi) and Dean Benedetti from Torre del Lago, a brilliant saxophonist who in his short life shaped the canon of bebop with Charlie Parker.
The closing of the festival is fantastic: an eight-minute show for a single spectator, in the monumental and muffled spaces of the Royal Victoria Hotel. Not only is it worth the trip to Pisa, but it sums up the flavor of this festival: opportunities to reflect face to face, walking on your own two feet in large or intimate spaces (there are also events in urban areas to discover, such as the mai.social.maison), the rediscovery of travel as a mental sphere and as nomadism between the corners of our home, and travel as opportunities for memory and surprise. Because the Festival del Viaggio reminds us that even at home, one feels good only anywhere else.
