Il segno del Cancro e l’eternità dell’amore, evocato dalla lunare bellezza di Meryl Streep

A inaugurare l’estate, c’è un giorno in cui il sole sembra non voler più tramontare: è il Solstizio, in cui i Gemelli cedono il passo al Cancro. Le culture che celebrano il Sole con antichi riti pagani evocano la forza della Luce che si contrappone al buio: gli Indiani Sioux gli dedicano antiche danze spiraliche, e molti paesi del Nord Europa festeggiano lo spettacolo del sole a Mezzanotte con feste e falò notturni come simbolo della lotta contro gli spiriti maligni.

Il giorno del Sole è il tempo della semina e dei raccolti, ma anche dei matrimoni.
Il Sole come simbolo d’amore si ritrova nei Tarocchi: è l’amore che nutre se stesso, il mondo e la vita tutta. È l’amore incondizionato che porta luce e chiarezza nelle situazioni di maggiore contrasto, o più forza e bellezza nelle unioni già armoniose.

Nei Tarocchi due figure si incontrano di fronte a un muretto di mattoni, simbolo di costruttività e ponderatezza, sovrastati dal sole che porta calore ma anche razionalità.

L’unione amorosa esprime bene il Segno del Cancro, il cui Maestro è però la Luna, simbolo materno per eccellenza, e non il Sole, che governa invece il Segno del Leone. Luna e Sole, principio femminile e maschile, si succedono, dunque, sia nei Tarocchi che nel cerchio zodiacale.

Come icona del Segno del Cancro scelgo Meryl Streep, che nell’ovale dolce del viso, la fronte alta e la luminosità diafana della pelle, evoca la bellezza e la simbologia lunare. E tra le sue molte interpretazioni, in cui sembra l’eletta rappresentante dell’amore romantico, scelgo uno tra i film più lunari e intensi, I ponti di Madison County, dove accanto a C. Eastwood, celebra l’incanto dell’incontro totalizzante che trasforma un tempo breve nell’eternità di un amore che sconfina i limiti della vita.

Il Cancro e l’unione primordiale
tra madre e figlio

Il Cancro, primo segno d’acqua, rappresenta però un’altra unione: quella primordiale tra madre e figlio, che si realizza in quell’acqua, sorgente di nutrimento e protezione, di rifugio e gestazione, che è il grembo materno.
La simbologia dell’acqua legata alla nascita è molto cara alle culture antiche, da Platone ai neoplatonici, attraverso le filosofie ermetiche, fino all’arte sacra. A Firenze, all’interno del Battistero di San Giovanni e della Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, antichi poli della vita sacra e religiosa della città, ci sono due Zodiaci nelle pavimentazioni posti di fronte alle rispettive porte principali. Entrando nel Battistero lo Zodiaco originario presenta il Cancro, mentre quello della Basilica di San Miniato al Monte presenta il Capricorno.

R. Guenon, grande studioso di mistica neoplatonica, rivela che il simbolismo dei Solstizi, oltre ai testi ermetici di Ermete Trismegisto, affonda le sue radici nel Timeo di Platone – che narra la discesa e l’ascesa delle anime attraverso il cielo delle stelle e dei Pianeti, da cui le anime assumono corpo luminoso e impulsi caratteriali – e ci guida a scoprire che il Cancro e il Capricorno rappresentano le due Porte del Cielo: quella del Cancro per discendere nella vita e incarnarsi, quella del Capricorno per ascendere nell’oltre, verso il divino. Il simbolismo dei due Solstizi e dei due Segni esprimeva nell’atmosfera sacra e esoterica di Firenze, l’antica connessione tra terra e cielo, tra vita e morte.

Dal simbolismo dell’acqua fonte di vita si estrapola l’inconscio bisogno del Cancro di ritornare alla madre: madre biologica, madre Terra, madre ideale e idealizzata.

Il suo glifo, composto da due mezzelune che terminano con due piccoli cerchi, ricorda due embrioni che danzano in un movimento a spirale.

Il suo animale simbolo è il granchio, dotato di corazza e chele, pronto ad attaccare difendendosi, ma tenero al suo interno. Così come il granchio indietreggia appena sente il pericolo e si rifugia nel suo guscio protettivo, per poi avanzare rapido, il nativo del Segno tende a rifugiarsi nel suo guscio familiare, tenacemente attaccato alle cose: cose antiche e tradizionali che conserva gelosamente, o cose a cui attribuire ex novo significati intimi e affettivi. Così come si ritrae nel guscio-famiglia, il nativo del Cancro si rifugia nel suo passato e vive di ricordi.

Tra i nativi più illustri del Segno troviamo Leopardi, Proust, Kafka, Ingmar Bergman, che esprimono i più tipici temi cancerini: l’esaltazione della soggettività, il tempo e la memoria del passato, l’attaccamento alle radici familiari, il senso di colpa e l’inadeguatezza nei confronti della famiglia e della società, l’analisi dell’animo umano e delle sue paure più recondite.

Il mondo cancerino è di una complessità estrema: in un dualismo costante vi si avvicendano esuberanza e nostalgia, ipersensibilità capricciosa e tenacia, spirito organizzativo e vulnerabilità. Sebbene la Luna, astro che lo governa, caratterizzi un’innata mutevolezza, la sua costante è l’ideogramma a spirale in cui si racchiude, che rappresenta la casa, la famiglia, l’attaccamento alle sue origini.

La sfida principale del Cancro risiede nell’imparare a padroneggiare l’intensa e variegata dimensione emotiva che rischia di distorcere la realtà. Solo sciogliendo il nodo karmico con il passato, senza disconoscere in esso l’ispirazione e il nutrimento necessari alla propria vita, il Cancro può rafforzare i propri canali ricettivi e creare basi interiori più forti, per far evolvere il suo Io partendo dal qui e ora.

The sign of Cancer and the eternity of love, evoked by the lunar beauty
of Meryl Streep

The cultures that celebrate the Sun with ancient pagan rites evoke the power of light that contrasts the darkness: the Sioux Indians dedicate ancient spiral dances to it, and many northern European countries celebrate the spectacle of the sun at Midnight with night parties and bonfires as a symbol of the fight against evil spirits.

The day of the Sun is the time of planting and harvesting, but also of marriages.

The Sun as a symbol of love is found in tarot cards: it is love that nourishes itself, the world and life as a whole. It is unconditional love that brings light and clarity in situations of greater contrast, or more strength and beauty in already harmonious unions.

In tarot cards two human beings meet in front of a brick wall, a symbol of constructivity and thoughtfulness, dominated by the sun that brings warmth but also rationality.

The love union expresses well the Sign of Cancer, whose Master is, however, the Moon, the maternal symbol par excellence, and not the Sun, which rules the Sign of the Lion. Moon and Sun, a feminine and masculine principle, therefore, occur both in tarot cards and in the zodiac circle.

As an icon of the Sign of Cancer I choose Meryl Streep, who in the sweet oval of the face, the high forehead and the diaphanous brightness of the skin, evokes beauty and lunar symbolism.

And among her many interpretations, in which she seems the elected representative of romantic love, I choose one of the most lunar and intense films, The Bridges of Madison County, where next to C. Eastwood, she celebrates the enchantment of a totalizing encounter that changes a very short time into the eternity of a love that goes beyond the limits of life.

Cancer, the first sign of water, however, represents another union: the primordial one between mother and child, which is realized in the water of the womb, a source of nourishment and protection, of refuge and gestation.

The symbolism of water linked to birth is very dear to ancient cultures, from Plato to Neo – platonism through hermetic philosophies, up to sacred art.

In Florence, inside the Baptistery of San Giovanni and the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, ancient poles of the sacred and religious life of the city, there are two Zodiacs in the pavements placed in front of the respective main doors.

Entering the Baptistery the original Zodiac presents the Cancer, while that of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte presents the Capricorn.

R. Guenon, a great scholar of Neo – platonic mystique, reveals that the symbolism of the Solstices, in addition to the hermetic texts of Hermes Trismegistus, has its roots in Plato’s Timeo – that narrates the descent and rise of souls through the sky of stars and planets, from which souls take on a luminous body and main character impulses – and guides us to discover that Cancer and Capricorn represent the two Doors of Heaven: that of Cancer to descend into life and that of Capricorn to ascend beyond, towards the divine. In the sacred and esoteric atmosphere of Florence, the symbolism of the two Solstices and the two Signs express the ancient connection between earth and sky, life and death.

From the symbolism of water that is the source of life, the unconscious need for Cancer to return to the mother reveals itself: a biological mother but also the Mother Earth, and all in all and ideal and idealized mother.

Its glyph, consisting of two half-moons ending with two small circles, resembles two embryos dancing in a spiral movement.

Only by dissolving the karmic knot with the past, without refusing to acknowledge the inspiration and nourishment necessary for one’s life, Cancer can do a great job to strengthen its receptive channels and create stronger inner bases, evolving its self starting from here and now.
