Mascherine anti Covid-19: quali possiamo lavare in lavatrice
Si possono riutilizzare le mascherine? Esperti del settore e associazioni di consumatori ci dicono che è possibile, ma a certe condizioni.

Mascherina FFP2 o KN95. L’ Italia l’ha resa obbligatoria per salire a bordo dei mezzi pubblici, treni, aerei e per accedere ad alcuni luoghi al chiuso, inclusi cinema, teatri, sale da concerto, locali di intrattenimento e musica dal vivo, per gli eventi e le competizioni sportive che si svolgono al chiuso o all’aperto, come riportato dal D.L. 221 del 24 dicembre scorso.
L’obbligo vale anche per quanti hanno avuto un contatto stretto con un individuo positivo al Covid-19 ma, in quanto vaccinati, non sono soggetti alla quarantena bensì alla sola auto-sorveglianza fino al decimo giorno successivo all’ultima esposizione al soggetto positivo.
Anche in Grecia nei luoghi al chiuso vige l’obbligo, mentre in Austria questo verrà applicato dal 25 gennaio. Laddove il suo utilizzo non è prescritto, esso è comunque consigliato, soprattutto a categorie di persone fragili, immunodepresse e che hanno avuto un contatto ad alto a rischio, come in Belgio.
Se le mascherine chirurgiche, in grado di offrire protezione dalle contaminazioni per un tempo massimo di 6/8 ore di utilizzo continuativo, sono rigorosamente monouso, quindi non sono riutilizzabili né lavabili, diversamente quelle filtranti (FFP1, FFP2 E FFP3) possono essere sia monouso (catalogate dalla sigla NR – non riutilizzabili) che riutilizzabili, a seconda di quanto indicato sull’etichetta.
Mascherine FFP2: efficaci
anche dopo il lavaggio
Le FFP2,grazie alla loro notevole capacità filtrante (circa il 92%) impediscono la trasmissione di virus e batteri alle persone vicine e all’ambiente, ma anche a chi le indossa di essere infettato.
Più difficile da trovare, rispetto a quella chirurgica, la FFP2 è anche più costosa. Online si può acquistare a circa 1,5 € a pezzo, mentre in farmacia, secondo una media europea, il prezzo della singola unità può persino superare i 5 €.
In Italia, si è stato recentemente raggiunto un accordo tra il commissario straordinario per l’emergenza Covid Francesco Paolo Figliuolo da una parte e FederFarma, AssoFarm e FarmacieUnite dall’altra per un prezzo calmierato dei dispositivi equivalente a 0,75€. Eppure si tratta di un prezzo consigliato che, a differenza di quanto avviene con le mascherine chirurgiche, il cui prezzo è fissato a 0,50€, non ha validità generale. In breve, ogni venditore può decidere di seguire o meno il suggerimento del governo.
Considerate le nuove norme, molti si domandano se si possa evitare di gettarle via dopo ogni utilizzo, e piuttosto lavarle. E ancora, premesso che ciò sia possibile e sicuro, per quante volte e con quali modalità?
La buona notizia, per quanti hanno a cuore la loro salute, ma anche quella delle proprie finanze, è che mantengono la loro efficacia anche dopo esser lavate.
Come sanificare adeguatamente le FFP2
L’analisi condotta lo scorso luglio dal Gruppo San Donato conferma la possibilità di riutilizzare le mascherine, previa valutazione del livello di usura dei materiali che le compongono. Le alternative sono due, entrambe valide e sicure:
– sostituire i filtri (quando questi non sono più capaci di assicurare una protezione efficace e in base alle indicazioni del produttore);
- lavare le mascherine con un comune detersivo a 60° seguendo le istruzioni sulla confezione circa il numero massimo di lavaggi possibili per non comprometterne la capacità filtrante.
L’anno scorso anche l’Associazione dei consumatori francese Que Choisir ha svolto le indagini per verificare l’efficacia delle mascherine effettuando test di laboratorio che hanno dimostrato come le mascherine FFP2 mantengano la loro efficacia anche dopo 10 lavaggi in lavatrice a una temperatura di 60 ºC e passate in asciugatrice e possono quindi essere utilizzate più volte. Ovviamente a condizione che i dispositivi siano rigorosamente conformi alle norme.
In caso di dubbi è sempre consigliabile e opportuno rivolgersi al medico di famiglia o farmacista di fiducia per un parere definitivo.
Considerata la contagiosità della variante omicron, in tutta Europa le misure di prevenzione rivestono attualmente una particolare importanza. Tra lotta alla disinformazione su Covid e vaccino, estensione dell’obbligo di green pass (nelle sue diverse declinazioni e intensità) l’uso di mascherine assieme al distanziamento sociale e un’accurata igiene (soprattutto delle mani) resta senza dubbio una delle misure di prevenzione più semplici ed efficaci per limitare i contagi e la diffusione del virus.

we can wash in the washing machine
Can the masks be reused? Industry experts and consumer associations tell us that it is possible, but under certain conditions.
FFP2 or KN95 mask. Italy has made it mandatory to board public transport, trains, airplanes and to access certain indoor venues, including cinemas, theaters, concert halls, entertainment venues and live music, for events and sports competitions that take place indoors or outdoors, as reported by the law decree n. 221 of last December 24th.
The obligation also applies to those who have had close contact with a Covid-19 positive individual but, as vaccinated, are not subject to quarantine but only to self-surveillance until the tenth day following the last exposure to an individual who has tested positive.
In Greece, too, the obligation applies in indoor spaces, while in Austria this will apply from 25 January. Where its use is not prescribed, it is still recommended, especially for fragile, immunosuppressed categories of people who have had high-risk contact, as in Belgium.
If the surgical masks, able to offer protection from contamination for a maximum time of 6/8 hours of continuous use, are strictly disposable, therefore they are neither reusable nor washable, unlike the filtering masks (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3) they can be disposable (cataloged by the initials NR – non-reusable) or reusable, depending on what is indicated on the label.
FFP2 masks: effective even after washing
Thanks to their remarkable filtering capacity (about 92%), FFP2 prevent the transmission of viruses and bacteria to neighboring people and the environment, but also to the wearer from being infected.
More difficult to find than surgical, FFP2 is also more expensive. Online you can buy it for around € 1.5 per piece, while in pharmacies, according to a European average, the price of a single unit can even exceed € 5.
In Italy, an agreement was recently reached between the extraordinary commissioner for the Covid emergency Francesco Paolo Figliuolo on the one hand and FederFarma, AssoFarm and FarmacieUnite on the other on a controlled price of the devices equivalent to € 0.75. Yet it is a recommended price which, unlike what happens with surgical masks, whose price is set at € 0.50, has no general validity. In short, each vendor can decide whether or not to follow the government’s suggestion.
Considering the new regulations, many are wondering if it is possible to avoid throwing them away after each use, and rather to wash them. And again, assuming that this is possible and safe, for how many times and in what ways?
The good news, for those who care about their health, but also that of their finances, is that they remain effective even after being washed.
How to properly sanitize FFP2 masks
The analysis conducted last July by the San Donato Group confirms the possibility of reusing the masks, after evaluating the level of wear of the materials that compose them. As indicated by two alternatives, both valid and safe:
-replacing the filters (when these are no longer able to ensure effective protection and according to the manufacturer’s instructions;
-washing them with a common detergent at 60 ° following the instructions on the package about the maximum number of possible washes in order not to compromise their filtering capacity.
Last year the French Consumer Association Que Choisir also carried out investigations to verify the effectiveness of the masks by carrying out laboratory tests that have shown that FFP2 masks maintain their effectiveness even after 10 washes in the washing machine at a temperature of 60. ºC and dried and can therefore be used several times. Obviously provided that the devices comply strictly with the standards.

Given the contagiousness of the omicron variant, prevention measures are currently of particular importance throughout Europe. Between the fight against disinformation on Covid and the vaccine, the extension of the green pass obligation (in its various forms and intensity), the use of masks together with social distancing and careful hygiene (especially of the hands) undoubtedly remains one of the measures of simpler and more effective prevention to limit infections and the spread of the virus.
