Fino al 27 agosto il centro storico di Varsavia si anima di serate di concerti di musica jazz: è il Festival Internazionale Open Air Jazz. Un festival di jazz gratuito con concerti che iniziano ogni sera alle 19. Per gli amanti del jazz, rappresenta un’opportunità di viaggio e d’incontro con musicisti jazz sia polacchi siainternazionali. Il festival del jazz di Varsavia, nato 27 anni fa, accoglie ogni anno milioni di persone grazie ai ritmi affascinanti creati durante i vari concerti, e la loro ambientazione nel cuore architettonico della città.
Per soddisfare una curiosità iniziale, tra i musicisti leggendari che hanno precedentemente partecipato al festival troviamo Archie Sheep, James Carter, Roy Hargrove, Ernie Watts, Bill Evan, Dino Saluzzi, Hiromi, Bobo Stenson, Stanley Jordan e Charnet Moffett, per menzionarne alcuni.
La musica, nella sua interpretazione di grandi capolavori o nel presentare nuove composizioni, mantiene sempre un potere rigeneratore per il pubblico. Il suono, la melodia, non solo trasporta, ma riconcettualizza, re-immagina una narrativa prestabilita nel trasporre l’ascoltatore in un’altra dimensione.
In un periodo di transizione, l’ascolto dell’altro attraverso una lingua universale, che comunica empatia, speranza, umiltà e determinazione, è essenziale nel costruire una società inclusiva. In tempi di guerra, considerando anche la vicinanza geografica della Polonia all’Ucraina, la musica grida perseveranza, unità. Per questo motivo, invito tutti i lettori al 28° Festival Internazionale Open Air Jazz a Varsavia, ecco il programma.
Il festival è iniziato il 2 luglio, quando si sono presentati al pubblico Ewa Bem & Andrzej Jagodziński Quartet. Ewa Bem è la donna più importante del mondo del jazz polacco per via della sua voce unica, accompagnata da un grande compositore con il quale lavora dal 1987.
Il 9 luglio l’Emmet Cohen Trio si è esibito nel centro storico della città: un gruppo emergente e innovativo nelle proprie tecniche, una grande ispirazione per i giovani musicisti che si lanciano nel mondo del jazz oggi. Poi è stata la volta del Kacper Smoliński Quintet, che ha suonato una rara forma di armonica jazz per il pubblico, accompagnati dall’unica voce di ogni membro del gruppo, creando una melodia inimitabile.
Il calendario dell’Open Air Jazz
Considerando i grandi artisti che si sono già esibiti, ecco i concerti dei prossimi giorni e mesi. Stasera 23 luglio, suona l’Heavy Metal Sextet, un gruppo jazz formato nel 1982 da Mariusz Bogdanowicz, noto compositore e contrabbassista. I musicisti sono Mariusz Bogdanowicz, Janusz Kowalski e Miroslaw Sitkowski.
Il 30 luglio, non perdetevi il Denys Baptiste Quartet – The Late Trane, uno dei personaggi più famosi nella scena jazz inglese, con un ritmo tutto suo, caratterizzato dalla sua versatilità, dal suo saper giocare con vari stili musicali mantenendo sempre un elemento tradizionale. Il Denys Baptiste Quartet è contemporaneo, moderno e classico.
Il 6 agosto, il gruppo Young Power che produce musica jazz-rock, offre un’opportunità di esibirsi sul palcoscenico ad artisti polacchi emergenti. Con un totale di 15 musicisti e una nuova struttura di gruppo, Young Power presenta New Edition – Freedom.
Il 13 agosto, Flip Philipp & Bert Mayer Quartet presentano al pubblico Vocation. In questo concerto appaiono due strumenti singolari, raramente usati: l’armonica cromatica e il vibrafono. Entrambi artisti di grande livello, collaboratori anche dell’Orchestra di Vienna, interpretano dei classici pezzi jazz basandosi sui lavori di Wes Montgomery, John Lewis, George Shearing e altri.
Il 20 agosto suona il Marcin Wasilewski Trio, presentando il loro settimo album En Attendant. Riconosciuti sia al livello nazionale che internazionale, la musica prodotta dall’insieme dei tre musicisti non va assolutamente persa.
Per concludere un’estate polacca di jazz, il Rosario Giuliani Quartet con Luciano Biondini e il programma Cinema Italia, costituito da vari temi di film di Ennio Morricone e Nino Rota. Rosario Giuliani, uno dei sassofonisti e compositori più rispettati dell’epoca contemporanea, famoso per il suo stile di performance e le sue abilità d’improvvisazione, porta in Polonia il suo amore per la musica tradizionale italiana attraverso il jazz.
Il programma del 28° Festival Internazionale Open Air Jazz è ricco e importante perché emana energia e ispirazione per giovani talenti, e per un pubblico che attraverso la musica, ristabilisce e ripensa ciò che sembra così sicuro. Open Air Jazz is an unmissable festival for the versatility of the musicians, for the contemporaneity of the proposals and for the singularity of some musical instruments.
Until August 27th Warsaw’s Old Town comes alive with evenings of jazz concerts in the historic centre of the Polish capital: the International Open Air Jazz Festival. The jazz festival entrance is free, and every concert starts at 7 pm.
For jazz lovers, it’s an opportunity to travel and to meet both Polish and international jazz musicians. The Warsaw jazz festival, born 27 years ago, welcomes millions of people every year thanks to the fascinating rhythms created by the various concerts, and their setting in the historic centre.
To satisfy an initial curiosity, legendary musicians who previously attended the festival include Archie Sheep, James Carter, Roy Hargrove, Ernie Watts, Bill Evan, Dino Saluzzi, Hiromi, Bobo Stenson, Stanley Jordan and Charnet Moffett, to name a few.
Music, in its interpretation of great masterpieces or in presenting new compositions, always maintains a regenerating power for the public. The sound, the melody, not only transports yet also reconceptualizes, and re-imagines a pre-established narrative by transposing the listener into another dimension.
In a period of transition, listening to others through a universal language, which communicates empathy, hope, humility, and determination, is essential in building an inclusive society. In times of war, also considering the geographical proximity of Poland to Ukraine, music cries out for perseverance and unity. For this reason, I invite the reader to the 28th International Open Air Jazz Festival in Warsaw, here is the program.
The festival started on July 2nd with the Ewa Bem & Andrzej Jagodziński Quartet presenting themselves to the public. Ewa Bem is the most important woman in the world of Polish jazz because of her unique voice, accompanied by a great composer with whom she has worked since 1987.
On July 9th, the Emmet Cohen Trio performed in the historic centre of the city: an emerging and innovative group in their techniques, a great inspiration for young musicians who launch themselves into the world of jazz today. On July 16th, the Kacper Smoliński Quintet played a rare form of jazz harmonica for the audience, accompanied by the unique voice of each member of the group, creating an inimitable melody.
The Open Air Jazz calendar
Considering the great artists who have already performed, here are the concerts for the next few days and months. This evening, on July 23d, he plays Heavy Metal Sextet, a jazz group formed in 1982 by Mariusz Bogdanowicz, a well-known composer and double bass player. The musicians are Mariusz Bogdanowicz, Janusz Kowalski and Miroslaw Sitkowski.

On August 6th, the Young Power group, which produces jazz-rock music, offers an opportunity to perform on stage for emerging Polish artists. With a total of 15 musicians and a new group structure, Young Power presents New Edition – Freedom.
On August 13th, Flip Philipp & Bert Mayer Quartet present Vocation to the public. In this concert, two singular instruments appear, rarely used: the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone. Both top-level artists, also collaborators of the Vienna Orchestra, interpret classic jazz pieces based on the works of Wes Montgomery, John Lewis, George Shearing and others.
On August 20th, the Marcin Wasilewski Trio plays, presenting their seventh album En Attendant. Recognized both nationally and internationally, the music produced by all three musicians is not lost.
To conclude a Polish summer of jazz, the Rosario Giuliani Quartet with Luciano Biondini, the Cinema Italia program, consisting of various film themes by Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota. Rosario Giuliani, one of the most respected saxophonists and composers of the contemporary era, famous for his performance style and his improvisation skills, brings his love for traditional Italian music to Poland through jazz.
The program of the 28th International Open Air Jazz Festival is rich and vital because it emanates energy and inspiration for young talents, and for an audience that through music restores and rethinks what seems so sure. Therefore, music, this summer, predominates with its great strength in generating dialogue.
