The surprise of the Festival of European Photography: it’s arriving the XVI Edition

Open calls for the various projects composing the Festival of European Photography were open until the twenty-second of February for all photographers, curators, European collectives and artists from the whole continent. The winning project will be assessed on its themes and its adaptability to be set up outdoors. The theme of the 2021 festival is based on a line by Gianni Rodari, reminding the fundamental role of imagination: “On Earth and on the Moon/  Make space for the dreamers! The winner will be awarded 3000 euros. This new edition of the Festival of European Photography not only reminds us to keep our head up, our eyes full of hope and our minds open to the imagination; it also provides us with a new way to meet. The stasis of last year has left lovers of art and photography deprived of the escape that the latter constitutes. Yet, we must remember that the artistical nature of photography is also one of stasis, wither a moment, a memory, spreads into the future and the past, transfixed in its image. In this way, the Festival of European Photography offers a new perspective on the moment. One day or another, our daily difficulties will become a momentaneous inanimate reproduction from which only fragments of the memory will be leftover. The festival presents a variety of perspectives to its public, through its artistic projects: this year’s directing team is composed of characters with different origins and perspectives, aspiring to an international spirit for the festival. Keep yourself ready for another artistic spring, filled with dreams and realised aspirations: the Festival of European Photography will take place from the 21st of May to the 4th of July, hosted in Reggio Emilia for its XVI edition.

The pandemic halted several initiatives from developing, from continuing started projects, but not this one. After having cancelled the previous edition for Covid-19 motives, the Festival of European Photography comes back with more ideas than ever. In the squares of Reggio Emilia, several outdoor spaces will be adapted and set up for this special occasion. The festival aims to create a space whither the being can let go of everything and dream, re-imagine. It will be a call not to abandon, not to leave out the most profound desires even when the world seems to be spinning in the opposite direction. Oppositely, such ideas must be cultivated and kept close to one’s heart more than ever. Through the photographic projects of great artists and new talents, art takes a new form of life, illustrating sides of the world that we could not have seen nor imagined, amalgamated with ideas we could not have shared with others due to our contemporary crisis. Art, once more, will help us to live.

Thus, Reggio Emilia will be invaded with photographic projects originating from all sides of Europe: as a new means to move, it will make us travel to another culture, city by city, filling a cultural void and fixing transcultural damage imposed by the pandemic: the lack of confrontation with diversity. The festival will be extended throughout all of Reggio Emilia’s streets, recounting the particular contemporaneity of the historical moment we are living through and its different realities throughout the continent. Knowing to be close to one another, with different stories but common realities, the state next to state, our lives intertwine and are bound to each other across all of Europe, making us part of a continental, European destiny. Thus, more united than over, we can imagine a future together, from the furthest capitals to the closest villages, interpreting photography in our own way, together.

The preview of such a project is planned for the 14th of May, offering a taste to a thirsty public seeking to re-imagine a continental future of which we are all architects, promoting the diversity of unique beauty: the one that Europe offers us. Moreover, the directors of the project share their experience and talent by emanating in the air the flavour of a European spirit, with personalities such as Diane Dufour, ex-director of Magnum Photo and ex-collaborator of the festival, Tim Clark, an Anglo-Saxon Chief Editor and founder of one of the most important photographic magazines, 1000 Words, all collaborating with Walter Guadagnini. For European travel through dreams and artistic innovation, do not miss out on this edition of the Festival. For young talents, keep your eyes open for the next open calls.
