Palazzo delle Esposizioni e il Museo dell’Ara Pacis aprono le loro porte a opere mozzafiato dei fotografi Don McCullin, Boris Mikhailov, e Helmut Newton, tre maestri della fotografia che hanno segnato l’arte visiva del XX secolo.
Don McCullin: un’eterna odissea fotografica
Il Palazzo delle Esposizioni ospita la prima retrospettiva italiana dedicata a Sir Don McCullin, uno dei più grandi fotografi documentaristi della nostra era. Attraverso oltre 250 immagini, McCullin racconta una carriera lunga oltre 60 anni, testimone di guerre, fame e paesaggi. La mostra si sviluppa attraverso sei diverse sezioni, una per sala, ciascuna dedicata a uno dei seguenti gruppi di opere: Esordi, Guerra e Conflitti, Immagini documentarie del Regno Unito, Immagini documentarie all’estero, Paesaggi e Nature morte, L’Impero romano. La mostra si riallaccia idealmente, ampliandola, all’antologica della Tate Britain curata da Simon Baker nel 2019 e abbraccia il lavoro del fotografo dall’Inghilterra subalterna alle guerre mondiali, con uno sguardo particolare all’Impero romano. Queste fotografie svelano il suo occhio audace e coinvolgente, che ha immortalato il dolore della guerra e la pacatezza dei paesaggi.
Boris Mikhailov: Il Diario Ucraino
Presso Palazzo Esposizioni, Laurie Hurwitz porta in scena Ukrainian Diary di Boris Mikhailov. Attraverso oltre 800 immagini provenienti da cinquant’anni di carriera, il fotografo ucraino esplora la disgregazione sociale seguita al crollo dell’Unione Sovietica, in termini di strutture sociali e condizione umana, l’oppressione sociale, la povertà devastante, la durezza e impotenza della vita quotidiana, sono alcune delle tematiche ricorrenti nelle immagini del fotografo Boris Mikhailov. Dalle serie Sots Art alle toccanti Case History Mikhailov rivela la sua visione della povertà, della politica e della vita quotidiana, creando una narrazione potente e provocatoria.
Helmut Newton: Legacy
L’eredità di uno stilista della luce
Il Museo dell’Ara Pacis celebra il centenario della nascita di Helmut Newton con la mostra Helmut Newton: Legacy. Three great photographers on display in Rome: a deep dive into the art of imagery
Rome is adorned with photography through three extraordinary exhibitions that illuminate the art of imagery. Palazzo delle Esposizioni and the Ara Pacis Museum open their doors to breathtaking works by Don McCullin, Boris Mikhailov, and Helmut Newton, three masters of photography who have marked the visual art of the 20th century.
Don McCullin: an eternal photographic odyssey
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni hosts the first Italian retrospective dedicated to Sir Don McCullin, one of the greatest documentary photographers of our era. Through over 250 images, McCullin narrates a career spanning more than 60 years, bearing witness to wars, famine, and landscapes. The exhibition unfolds through six different sections, one per room, each dedicated to one of the following groups of works: Beginnings, War and Conflicts, Documentary Images of the United Kingdom, Documentary Images Abroad, Landscapes and Still Lifes, The Roman Empire. The exhibition is conceptually linked, expanding upon it, to the Tate Britain retrospective curated by Simon Baker in 2019, encompassing the photographer’s work from subaltern England to the World Wars, with a particular focus on the Roman Empire. These photographs unveil his bold and engaging eye, capturing the pain of war and the serenity of landscapes.
Boris Mikhailov: the Ukrainian Diary
At Palazzo Esposizioni, Laurie Hurwitz presents Boris Mikhailov’s Ukrainian Diary. Through over 800 images from fifty years of his career, the Ukrainian photographer explores social disintegration following the collapse of the Soviet Union. From the Sots Art series to the poignant Case History Mikhailov reveals his vision of poverty, politics, and daily life, creating a powerful and provocative narrative.

The Ara Pacis Museum celebrates the centenary of Helmut Newton’s birth with the exhibition Helmut Newton: Legacy. Over 200 shots, including 80 unpublished ones, trace Newton’s extraordinary life, from his escape from Nazi Germany to the 1990s.
