(English translation below)

a Parigi

Yayoi Kusama a Berlino

Fino all’8 agosto
Georgia O’Keeffe a Madrid

Capitals of Europe and unmissable art exhibitions: here’s when and where in this summer 2021

During a summer journey, what does one find in European cities and capitals? The role of modern art is expanding throughout European cities, from London to Madrid, all the way to Paris and Berlin. These locations tend to be some of the most visited on our continent, for their development of great culture and for that of their own historical values. At the end of more than a year of stasis, in a moment where you may feel more relaxed to return to the idyllic idea of travel, I would like to invite you not to miss these shows. This summer, I would like to invite you to re-imagine a different future, sparked by the strength and importance of creativity, which with the re-opening of museums and galleries has challenged the European continent.

Until october 31st Henri Cartier-Bresson, master of street photography in Paris

On the occasion of the first reopening show, the Museum Carnavalet – Histoire de Paris associated itself with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, to honour the latter artist. Henri Cartier-Bresson was a very important figure in the art world, one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century, a master of street photography which represented, in the shot of the photograph, improbable moments, unexpected, thus so normal, candid. Through these photographs, not only can one re-imagine the reality of Paris in previous years, but one can also learn to know Cartier-Bresson and his relationship with the city of lights. Taking photographs of historical events, Cartier-Bresson is inspired by the individual, who is at the centre of social, political, and economic changes. This re-conceptualisation of a present that must always remain “constant” renders freedom to human realities and reminds us that how we perceive situations and places, depending on one’s attitude, on the look that one decides to adopt. This is a great teaching in times of Covid-19, where all movement, of body and mind, seems impossible in this period of stasis. The show will remain open from the 15th of June to the 31st of October 2021.

Until 22nd August Brutal Beauty
by Jean Dubuffet in London

Again, the work of another French artist, Jean Dubuffet, who claimed that “art should always make you laugh a little and fear a little. Anything but bore”, one finds the exhibition Brutal Beauty at the Barbican Art Gallery of London. From the 17th of May to the 22 of August, the work of the artist, on a 50-year period, will be exhibited in the English capital, recounting the rebellion of the artist towards beauty standards, a common reaction of the post-war period which wanted to present the poetry of everyday life in a different light, more honest and thus maybe even more complicated. This exhibition brings together his works from all over the world, from private and public collectors, constituting a panorama of statues, portraits, lithographs, paintings and much more. Jean Dubuffet invites the public to re-imagine an artistic reality shaped by the acceptance of the ugly, in the beauty of the monotonous, engaging in a stimulus concerning modern art.

Until August 15th
the art of Yayoi Kusama in Berlin

Otherwise, for those who would like to go to Berlin, I would advise visiting Gropius Bau, where the whole space was left to the artistic presentation of Yayoi Kusama, one of the most important contemporary art artists of our time. From the 23 of April to the 15th of August 2021, the exhibition A Retrospective will stay open to the public in a space of 3000 square meters, A Retrospective presents an overview of the artists’ work over a timeframe of more than 70 years, with sculptures and paintings, exploring its artistic path in Germany and Europe. By not revealing too much about the artist and her work, I would like to leave you to the mystery of the discovery of her masterpieces.

Until August 8th Georgia O’Keeffe
in Madrid

Finally, at Madrid’s Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, the masterpieces of the American contemporary artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, will be exhibited from the 20th of April to the 8th of August 2021. Travelling throughout Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic career thanks to her works, from 1910 paintings of New York to those of New Mexico, the innovative stimulus of past ideas is endless. The colours and the styles of her pieces, floral and harmonious, spark the desire to travel, to which I invite all of you in these still times. With the current security measures provided by all European countries, such an artistic journey reminds of the fundamental role of art in growing up and in going forward, yet also in reconnecting.
