The boys in the band è stato un testo chiave del teatro LGBT ed è stato rappresentato mille e una volte fino al 1970 dopo aver fatto il suo debutto nell’Off Broadway.
Scritta dal commediografo americano dichiaratamente gay Mart Crowley, morto nel 2020 a 84 anni per complicazioni cardiache, torna in scena dal 26 aprile al 1 maggio alla Sala Umberto di Roma per la regia di Giorgio Bozzo.
La commedia è considerata una pietra miliare nella storia del teatro proprio nella sua prerogativa di prima commedia a tematica gay scritta per il grosso pubblico. Inoltre, al suo debutto, ebbe sorprendenti successo e consenso di critica e pubblico.
Furono in tanti ad accorrere in teatro per vedere i nove ragazzi omosessuali della band di Mart Crowley, e soprattutto personaggi famosi come Marlene Dietrich, Groucho Marx e lo stesso sindaco di New York, John Lindsay.
Era la fine degli anni Sessanta e il movimento omosessuale americano non avrebbe iniziato le proprie battaglie che l’anno successivo, nel 1969, in seguito ai disordini alla Stonewall Inn di New York. Questo inquadramento storico ci dà la misura dell’importanza di questo lavoro teatrale e la rilevanza del suo successo.
Nel 1970 la commedia fu reinterpretata in chiave cinematografica dal regista William Friedkin, utilizzando il cast originale di Broadway.
In Italia il film debuttò nell’ottobre del 1970 con il titolo Festa di compleanno per il caro amico Harold.
Nel 2018 Ryan Murphy produce un riallestimento della commedia a Broadway con un cast di stelle della TV, tra cui Jim Parson (Michael), Zachary Quinto (Harold), Matt Bomer (Donald) e Robin De Jesus, che riceve il Tony Award come miglior revival di un’opera teatrale. Lo stesso cast viene poi coinvolto nel remake cinematografico prodotto sempre da Murphy per Netflix, uscito nel 2020 con la regia di Joe Mantello.
Ora la coinvolgente storia di Michael e dei suoi amici torna sul palco della Sala Umberto di Roma nella versione italiana firmata da Giorgio Bozzo, con l’adattamento di Costantino Della Gherardesca, dopo essere andata in scena la prima volta nel 2019 con alcune repliche prima di fermarsi a causa della pandemia.
Sul palco i nove amici sono interpretati da Francesco Aricò, Alberto Malanchino, Paolo Garghentino, Angelo Di Figlia, Ettore Nicoletti, Samuele Cavallo, Federico Antonello, Gabrio Gentilini e Jacopo Adolini.
In un appartamento su due piani all’altezza della 50th a New York un gruppo di amici omosessuali organizza una festa di compleanno per Harold, che compie 32 anni.
A sorpresa, tra i vari amici si presenta anche Alan, un vecchio amico dei tempi del college di Michael, a New York per lavoro, che dice di aver disperata necessità di parlare con lui. Tra bevute, screzi e battute pesanti gli uomini si sfidano in un gioco in cui ciascuno deve telefonare a una persona che conosce e confessarle che la ama. Un gioco che metterà a nudo l’inquieto passato di ognuno.

The Boys in the Band was a key text of LGBT theater and was performed a thousand and one times until 1970 having made his speech on Off-Broadway.
Written by the American playwright Mart Crowley declares gay, who died in 2020 at 84 from heart complications, it returns to the stage from April 26 to May 1 at the Sala Umberto in Rome under the direction of Giorgio Bozzo.
Comedy is considered a milestone in the history of theater precisely in its prerogative as the first gay-themed comedy written for the general public. Moreover, in its debut, it had surprising success and acclaim from critics and audiences.
Many flocked to the theater to see the nine homosexual boys of Mart Crowley’s band, and above all famous people such as Marlene Dietrich, Groucho Marx, and the mayor of New York himself, John Lindsay.
It was the late 1960s and the American homosexual movement did not begin its battles until the following year, in 1969, following the riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York. This historical framework gives us the measure of the importance of this play and the relevance of its success.
In 1970 the comedy was reinterpreted in a cinematic key by director William Friedkin, using the original Broadway cast.

Now the engaging story of Michael and his friends returns to the stage of the Sala Umberto in Rome in the Italian version signed by Giorgio Bozzo, with the adaptation by Costantino Della Gherardesca, after being staged for the first time in 2019 with some reruns before stopping due to the pandemic.

In a two-story apartment at the 50th in New York, a group of homosexual friends organizes a birthday party for Harold, who turns 32. Surprisingly, Alan, an old friend from Michael’s college days, in New York on business, also introduces himself, and says he desperately needs to talk to him.
